Be aware that the accuracy of all charts
is dependent on the their base survey, which can itself be suspect.
Also be aware that the mandated priority of the national hydrographic
agencies is to give priority to satisfying national defense interests
first, and, second, the needs of commercial shipping. Recreational boating
is low on the list. In the Bahamas just two ports, Freeport in Grand
Bahama and Nassau Harbour, benefit from detailed coverage. This said,
BA charts provide is the best supporting all-area coverage for both
passage making, and approaches to the 30 meters/100 feet countour. This
is why we chose them. They are superb both for your bluewater transits
and offshore coastal navigation.
In
this guide we cover suggested transit routes in our Principle
Routes at the start of each Cruising Ground
section, each route color-coded, with Headings,
Distances, and the type of transit (Ocean or Deep
Water, Bank or Shallow Water, and Intricate
Passages or Passes requiring Visual Navigation).
These routes are also described in the text. At the moment when you
put the chart to one side,
we continue to hold your hand. In each
cruising ground chapter, under Pilotage. Talking
Captain to Captain,
we give you the detailed advice
we would give you if we were by your side,
with you, at the helm. This guidance is supplemented by air photographs,
and photographs of prominent
features where these are of value. Some
of our destination maps, although not intended for pilotage, show
the general line of harbor entries.
